I was given a single, beautifully rendered concept of a functional submersible as the starting point for this asset. From there, I conducted my own research to ensure the design felt mechanically plausible and capable of performing the maneuvers required in the sequence. Since the craft was largely inspired by the silhouette of a manta ray, I focused on maintaining a sleek, hydrodynamic profile while incorporating features that would support believable underwater navigation. In the end, I was also able to contribute a number of smaller creative flourishes to the final design—always a rewarding part of the process.

And to work  I did.

JOURNEY 2 : THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND
2012
Studio : Pixomondo

Role : CG Artist

The Nautilus

This project was a personal highlight in my artistic career. Having grown up reading 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, it was a genuine thrill to contribute to this interpretation of the Nautilus. The design drew heavily from the elegant form of a manta ray, and I was provided with both original concept art and a functional interior layout to guide the work. While a rough block-in existed for early shot planning, my task was to fully develop the exterior and refine the structure so it felt technically plausible within the story and aligned seamlessly with the live-action sets. Bringing this iconic vessel to life—both visually and functionally—was truly a nerdy kid's dream come true!
