Futuristic MRI

This stylized MRI was built on top of an older, practical MRI unit, with CG enhancements added to bring its design in line with the film’s overall aesthetic. In addition to updating the look of the machine, I also animated its spin-up sequence, giving the device a more dynamic and visually engaging presence on screen.

Early in the production, I was also responsible for developing the interior vault wall and door, creating a visual and structural connection between the exterior environment and the interior shots. I began building the initial setups and blockouts, but as the exterior vault door animation grew more demanding, those interior tasks were ultimately passed to another artist to carry forward. Everything came together beautifully in the final result.

From the outset, the direction was very clear that the lock mechanisms needed to appear fully functional and mechanically grounded, since the audience would eventually see this massive door open to allow the characters inside.

The initial reveal of this room spans a surprisingly large amount of space, requiring a full digital extension of what was originally an empty warehouse. Although it appears only in a single establishing shot, it was rewarding to shape the environment so the arrangement of pipes and wall details naturally guided the viewer’s eye to the right as the camera pans across the scene.

Alphie's Vault Entrance Room

This sequence opens the film, with the protagonists infiltrating the lower levels of an AI bunker in search of the robot’s super-weapon. Their path leads them to an enormous, monolithic mechanical door. I received an early concept sketch and was asked to infuse the design with a visual tone reminiscent of Akira. From there, the door evolved through a collaborative back-and-forth between myself, the art director, and the VFX supervisor, ultimately becoming a unique and imposing structure that felt appropriate for such a high-stakes reveal. I also had the opportunity to animate elements of the door’s mechanics—its unlocking sequences and opening motions—which made the task especially enjoyable.
