Stark Tower Street Destruction

I created extensive replacement street destruction in the areas immediately surrounding the tower, ensuring the damage integrated naturally with the new tower elements added for the sequence. In several cases, entire buildings were rebuilt as fully CG assets so their structure, scale, and damage patterns better supported the revised composition. This allowed the environment to feel cohesive and grounded while accommodating the updated narrative and visual requirements of the shot.

NYC Skyline Extension

This shot required a fully CG environment to follow Iron Man as he comes to a hover and comes to a stop in midair. The mid-ground buildings were entirely CG, carefully modeled and detailed to interact believably with the character’s movement. For the far background, a modified 2D panorama was used and adjusted to suit the composition and perspective of the shot, ensuring the overall environment felt expansive, dynamic, and fully integrated with the action.

Elevator Door Damage

This was a relatively quick but enjoyable task. The main challenge was creating an interactive impact that convincingly deformed as the Hulk slammed his fist onto the door. Inside, the effect was more subtle—a muffled dent—scaled back from the original, more pronounced design to suit the shot. For the exterior, I developed a second, more detailed impact that incorporated additional destruction, including the snapping of the decorative door paneling, to enhance the sense of force and physicality.

For the overhead shots, the environment was almost entirely a full 3D reconstruction, with only a small practical plate at the center where the Avengers assemble. I built out all surrounding elements—from large structural pieces like the parking garage and elevated roadway to the finer street-level details, debris fields, and damaged storefronts. This allowed the entire area to feel cohesive, immersive, and properly integrated with the action occurring at the center of the shot.

NYC Street  Destruction
This sequence occurs during the initial Chitauri invasion of New York in the first Avengers film, which meant many of the original environments had to be faithfully reconstructed—but from entirely new angles and perspectives. I received lidar data from the on-set photography and used it as the foundation for rebuilding the locations. From there, I combined projection techniques with custom 3D geometry to enrich the shots, adding the appropriate layers of destruction and environmental detail needed to integrate seamlessly with the established look of the original film.
