In addition to adding new areas to the expansion, new monsters were needed to populate it. One of the first monsters proposed was a modified version of the Earth Elemental from NWN2.

After giving it some thought I proposed it wouldn't be to far of a stretch to just create a new creature from scratch quickly as opposed to just a retextured version of the current Earth Elemental.

I went into the D&D 3.5 monster manual and just modeled what was already in the book, as Wizards of the Coast™ is very strict when it comes to keeping in visual line with it's establish intellectual properties. In the end we were left with a new, alternate version to the Earth Elemental, one that lived within the tombs of earth in the game's starting area. The Barrow Earth Elemental is visually not as top heavy as the original, having a rocky outcropping of arms to pummel it's enemies.

With the usage of tint mapping, a large amount of variants were able to be created and used at the player / designer's discretion.

Tint mapped variants of the base model. Glowing rune stoned elementals on the right were not included into the game.
